I
thought of this while building a wall for an ocean base in 1.9.4 or so,
1.5 (1 at the minimum) months ago. What I did then was put a wooden
plank block on top of the wall outline, then put a cobblestone block on
top of the wooden planks, then put a wooden planks block on top of that,
and so on until I reached where I would stop the wall.
My intention of doing that specific block pattern was to make it harder for people to break in through it, while still being able to have a good amount of cobblestone remaining. I honestly made the wall (and world) as practice for my own personal server and Let's Play series, but it had me thinking of other stuff in addition.
I thought that it might be a good thing for factions servers, at least if you have iron blocks and obsidian, due to the lower amount of stronger resources required (IE Obsidian). It may take longer if you don't have diamond tools if you use obsidian in the wall, molds being used instead, but the time spent should be worth it.
TL;DR - If you make a checkerboard pattern of one block that you intended to use with a stronger and harder to break block, it'll take longer for someone to get in and use less resources.
Cobblestone and [Oak] Planks - You would probably start out using this design, due to the easily obtainable nature of cobblestone and wooden planks. I use oak planks in my example, but you can use any type of wood.
Stone Bricks and Iron Blocks - This is a step up from the normal cobblestone and wood planks. It requires a lot of iron to craft into bricks, so you need to either make it a small section, do it on a server where you can buy and/or trade iron, or do it in creative.
Iron Blocks and Obsidian - And here is the final one. You both need iron blocks and diamond tools, so this is quite the creative and buy/trade server-exclusive reinforced wall design.

Combinations of Materials
So far, I have thought of two aesthetically-pleasing combinations of blocks, and a frankly ugly, but practical combination. Here they are.Cobblestone and [Oak] Planks - You would probably start out using this design, due to the easily obtainable nature of cobblestone and wooden planks.

Building Types
To me, there are two different ways to do the reinforced wall.- The Checkerboard - This was my original example in the Reddit post, and the one that you would most likely think of first. In the ratio I used as an example of the image (3:7), there are 11 primary blocks and 10 secondary blocks (21 blocks total.)
- The Horizontal Lines - This was another way I thought of doing this after the post on r/minecraft. It may seem like there is less blocks than there was in the checkerboard pattern, but there is actually the same amount. In the example's 3:7 ratio, it involves 14 primary blocks and 7 secondary blocks, 21 blocks in total.
Time to Break
These all have been timed using iron tools, and stone tools for the first one, plus diamond for the last. I also assume that nobody else is mining with the person, they are only taking a 1:2 block area out of the wall, and you (And/or your team) are not attacking the person.Cobblestone and Wooden Planks (Checkerboard, Stone Tools) - 05:22 (5 seconds)
